Maha (great) Bandha (seal) is at once a powerful and subtle practice that unites the physical, breath, and energetic practices of Yoga. While these practices are all rooted in the physical practice, they are ignited by the breath and meant to move our subtle energy through our inner beings towards deeper states of consciousness, and freedom. The 3 primary bandhas, Jalandhara (chin lock), Uddiyana (abdominal lift) and Mula (root lock) are learned and practiced separately and then brought together.

In this weekend, we will explore the history and philosophy of these practices and learn them step by step to create both physical vigor, enhanced and intentional energy and a state of focused calm. The 3 Bandhas begin with physical activation and then are applied to pranayama practices, ultimately landing in the management and directing of our subtle energy. Each Bandha is connected to a “wheel of energy” that supports our posture and specific Asanas, as well as an energetic “knot” or granthi which we are meant to break through, leading to greater health and spiritual well-being.

The strong morning practices will include Asana and Pranayama curated for each Bandha; afternoons will begin with lecture and discussion and conclude with breathwork and meditation. This weekend will truly deepen and advance your Yoga.

DAY 1: Friday October 10

10:30 -12:30: Practice for Mula Bandha, and the pelvic wheel

1:30 -5: We’ll begin with an Intro to the history of the practice including:

* Physical and subtle body anatomy

* The Nadis and the Sushumna

* When -- and when not -- to practice the Bandhas

DAY 2: Saturday October 11

10:30 - 12:30 : Practice for Jalandhara Bandha, and the skull wheel

1:30 -5: We’ll review the essential anatomy of breathing:

• Movements of the diaphragm

• Accessory muscles of the breath

• Chin lock and Skull wheel energetics

• The great myth of Shakti rising, and Kundalini energy

DAY 3 Sunday, October 12

10:30 -12:30: Practice for Uddiyana and Maha Bandha, and the rib wheel

1:30-4: We’ll review the physical, energetic and mental “pre-requisites” for Maha Bandha. The ordering and rhythm of the practices will be brought together. Deeper pranayama techniques including Maha Mudra (the great seal) will be practiced, and we will aim ourselves towards the abiding goals of Yoga: directing our whole Self towards freedom in body, mind and spirit.

This weekend is open to all who want to take their practice deeper. Yoga Teachers are especially encouraged to come as these practices are often misunderstood and their transmission can be tricky.
